Abstract | The grand Erie Canal was a monumental achievement. To celebrate this accomplishment, the New York State Canal Commissioners placed two inscribed capstones in the Lockport flight of locks. The inscriptions on these capstones reflect the views of the visionaries who advocated for the canal and the supporters who made it a reality. Through these capstones, we can gain insight into what they felt was important to celebrate and pass on to future generations. |
