Join the New York State Museum for a special evening exploring the stories behind Witness to 9/11, the Museum's newest exhibition. Moderated by Aaron Noble, Senior Historian of Military and Political History at the New York State Museum, this conversation features acclaimed photojournalists Todd Maisel and David Handschuh, whose photographs document the events of September 11, 2001, and their aftermath.
When American Airlines Flight 11 struck the North Tower of the World Trade Center at 8:46 a.m., Maisel and Handschuh responded to Lower Manhattan alongside fellow journalists, unaware of the unprecedented tragedy that was unfolding. Their photographs captured moments of devastation, courage, and resilience that have become part of the historical record.
During this program, each photographer will reflect on their career, their experiences covering September 11th, and the personal and professional impact of documenting one of the defining events in American history. The evening will conclude with a moderated discussion and audience Q&A, using selected images from the exhibition as a starting point to examine the enduring role of photojournalism in preserving history and memory.
